Will China Invade Afghanistan?

I was listening to the ABC Radio (Australia) evening current affairs programme "PM" on my way home last night. It featured an interview with someone named Loretta NAPOLEONI. A fuller interview is on the ABC website, and I'll check it out later, but a couple of things struck me:

She has written a book called "Maonomics" and her general opinion is that the CCP are much better at being capitalists than the West. That could stand up to some scrutiny.

The second thing that was the main point of the above-mentioned interview was that the mob producing all the heroin in Afghanistan are doing all the "value adding" to the raw poppy juice themselves, cutting out all the intermediaries required to get the stuff into Europe and dealing it directly into Pakistan and Iran. And are looking to the 1500 million people in China as their next market.

This, of course, has the PRC very toey, and Napoleoni's thesis is that China will be only too keen to invade Afghanistan in order to "protect" itself and its people. The Opium Wars of the mid-19th Century are recent history to the Chinese and they definitely do not want a repeat of same in the 21st.

I need to put aside some time to research this further, but if any learned OE alumnus has heard or read more, I'd be interested in reading it here.

What about the opium produced in Burma, the golden triangle.

Surely they would have invaded these places first if that was their overall goal.

I don't think China will invade anywhere, I think China will just do business quietly to get what they want.

Well at the moment anyway, who can tell what will happen in the distant future.

So you've subscribed to a fixed number with Skype? If so, which country is the number associated with? Unrelated to this topic, I thought I'd mention I haven't used Skype for years. However, I recently had reason to call a company in the UK and it appears to be impossible to call freephone numbers in the UK from overseas using fixed line and mobile phones, so I turned to Skype as it's apparently possibly to call freephone numbers (for free) via Skype, and it worked!

I was going to make the same point about Viet Kieus in the UK. Those I know who have fully embraced British culture understand that abject shows of wealth is generally considered to be rather vulgar. The rest see flamboyant shows of wealth to be proof of their supposed success. The Vietnamese that enjoy showing off their wealth are generally the ones who have it. Staying at a 5* resort on my recent trip to VN really showed how brash and vulgar the Vietnamese really can be.  The only comparison I can make is how newly wealthy Russians used to be.

HSSS - That is a great quote. Thanks....called last night and we had a great conversation. Like I said earlier I have not wanted a relationship in the past 3 years. Kinda feels like 20 again. Golf - Great insight. I have worried about the "materialistic" issues as I have read about that alot. She always offers to pay for dinner and even said..."she would not go out with me again if I always pay"...did not know how to take it but I keep paying anyway. She can pay if we go to McDonalds I told her :)  She does drive an older Mercedes as that seems to be the car of choice of local VN here. I saw pictures of her trip to VN and it seems she lives on the higher end of things there. All her family own some type of business and she went to a orphanage and donated alot of items from what I see. I guess that part of helping others made me more attracted to her. She does not ask for anything except I come and get a pedi from her...seems wierd having her service my feet when I like her. Cooking dinner for her Friday. I will tell her I like her then.
